Eirini Antonaki – Human Rights

Art in every form may be the most powerful means of expression and communication between civilizations from every corner of the world. A painting, a text, a melody can connect people who speak a different language, have different beliefs, habits and dreams.

About me: I was born in Athens in 2000, where I continue to live until this day. I study Architecture at National Technical University of Athens, while at the same time I attend several seminars and workshops about art, comics, creativity and photography among others. I have always had a great passion for art. I’m involved in various forms, such as sketching, theater, music and writing. Concerning music and theater, I have been a member of the team “Theatrical - Musical Team of students and graduates of the 2nd High School of Voula” since 2013. I have taken part in many festivals and musical and theatrical events and competitions. I was also a member of “Liber Animus” choir (2013-2017), while I was attending guitar and piano lessons. But most of the time I’m sketching – anywhere, anytime, with every tool I have access to. My creative work: It is basically composed of paintings, sketches, texts, photography and at times a combination of the above with collage. I work both analog, with ink, markers, charcoal and pastel and digitally with design and editing software. I’m inspired by everyday situations that I have experienced externally and internally. Social and political issues, interpersonal relationships, phenomena of everyday decline etc. usually is what usually triggers me. That’s why my work is widely human centered, because I believe that all of the above is directly or indirectly related. Why I create: Because it fulfills me, because it’s a way to express my thoughts, to channel the negative energy and to expose myself. It’s a personal need, which is why my work is often unfiltered, spontaneous. It is an associative path, intensity in both of the texture of the line and the emotion, a raw depiction of worries and everyday life through the prism of distortion, a confusion that eventually passes to the viewer. The texts that I include in my works are not always visible to the viewers and, even when they are, they’re not legible in a logical order. Thus, the confusion I’m referring to, becomes even more intense and a part of the conception which always remains invisible and, therefore, purely personal.

Description

Art in every form may be the most powerful means of expression and communication between civilizations from every corner of the world. A painting, a text, a melody can connect people who speak a different language, have different beliefs, habits and dreams. People who seem to have nothing in common, in fact, share one important characteristic: their rights. Fundamental human rights are one of the most important issues worldwide. Even though they apply to everyone, in reality, many times they are not encroached. That is the reason why their reassurance is not just a vision, but a principal human pursuit.

As an international hub of communication, art can, not only talk about human rights, but also contribute substantially to the creation of a sustainable world for everyone. With every pencil, paper or brush pointing towards this direction, we are one step closer to social change because art is much more than “a beautiful painting”. Through it everyone can speak to everyone about everyone. We just have to blink our eyes a little and listen to what it has to say to us – thus, we’ll see that art can change the world.
